Excerpt

And I’m also torn about Julien. I think I’m falling in love with him, even though I really don’t know anything about him, except that he’s incredibly smart and successful and has horrible nightmares. But I know nothing about his family, his childhood, his past loves, or anything else for that matter. And every time I’ve tried to ask about even the most basic details of his childhood, he manages to change the subject or turn the focus to me. All he has ever told me is that he grew up in Mexico, and was extremely close with his mother, who died of cancer shortly after he graduated from high school. That’s literally all I know about a man who is becoming an obsession – a man I want to love even more than I realized I could love.My relationship with him is so important – not only because he seems like a potential soul mate (if I could just get him to open up more), but also because of what he has done, and can continue to do, to help my family and community. Last night I tried to bring us even closer by offering him a priceless token of my love and gratitude, but he refused to accept it from me, which left me feeling strangely rejected and unsure about him again. I’ve been wondering whether he wouldn’t take my necklace because he’s afraid he won’t stay with me over the long term.
I just wish that I didn’t feel so much weaker and more vulnerable than Julien. Will there always be a giant power disparity between us because I need his help so much? And I know nothing about him... Am I really falling for a man who is almost a complete stranger?

5*
I'm going to start this by saying that although you get an overview of The Syrian Virgin at the beginning of the book I would advise you to buy the book and read it first so you get the full story, there is no way the overview does the story justice.

I was so surprised by this book, the multiple twists and turns really had me gasping and on the edge of my seat, I honestly never in a million years could have predicted any of it! The wait for this book has been almost unbearable for me, I am in no way, shape or form a fan of cliffhangers... I hate them, they are the bane of my existence so not knowing what happens next with these characters has been bordering on torturous, but I have to say the wait was so worth it. I quite simply adore this series... The characters, the locations, the trauma, everything about it is so incredibly spot on that I can't imagine it being any other way and if I'm honest I think I may have fallen even more in love with these characters! Anissa's Redemption was the perfect ending to an amazing series.

Excerpt

“It’s OK, Anissa. We don’t need to rehash that incident now. I’m just reminding us both that – even though you are the most angelic woman I’ve ever met – you’re still human,” he added with a gentle smile, as he lightly put his hand on mine. “So I’m still taking a risk by sharing this with you.”

“I understand that,” I conceded.

“Good. So before I take that risk, I need your most solemn oath that – whatever happens between us – you will never repeat what I’m about to uncover for the first time ever... ” His stare seemed to penetrate my eyes, probing deep into my interior. With so much solemnity surrounding his revelation, whatever it was, I almost didn’t want him to tell me anymore. “Because once I tell you this, there’s no going back.”

I took a hard swallow and braced myself to receive something that I could never share with anyone. “I swear to you, Julien, on the memory of my blessed parents, and on the future of my people, that I will never tell a soul.”

He nodded slightly, as if to acknowledge my vow, and took his hand back. He let out a deep breath, and his hands began to fidget a little, as if he was trying to decide where and how to begin. I put my glass down on the coffee table, wanting to concentrate as much as possible on whatever he was about to say. After a few moments of silence, he finally spoke.

Synopsis

Anissa is traumatized by the most brutal conflict of the 21st Century: the Syrian Civil War. In 2012, Islamists in Homs terrorize a Syrian-Christian community and destroy everything that a young woman holds dear. Narrowly escaping death, Anissa restarts her devastated life as a college student in NY. She is bewildered and lost -- a virgin in every sense.

But despite her inexperience with men and life in the United States, Anissa is quickly drawn to two powerful individuals: Michael Kassab, the Syrian-American leader working to found the first Mideast Christian state, and Julien Morales, her Columbia University professor who runs a $20 billion hedge fund.

Complicating matters, Michael is still attached to his ex-girlfriend and Julien is the most sought after bachelor in Manhattan (and has hidden demons even his therapist can't extract). Anissa's heart and her communal ties pull her in different directions, as she seeks hope and renewal in a dark world.

WARNING: This book is about a young woman's difficult journey: her escape from Syria's Civil War, her transition to a new a country, and the relationships that she forms along the way, including her romantic interests in two very different men. The story is set against the backdrop of the Syrian Civil War and makes reference to violent acts, sometimes in detail. There is some occasional profanity and a few scenes that depict sexual intimacy. Accordingly, the recommended minimum age for readers is 16. The novel might be compared to books like "The Diary of Anne Frank" or "The Kite Runner."

Excerpt

We were peacefully rallying for our cause, when some strangers accosted me and started to debate us. But then it became clear that they didn’t really want to debate as much as harass . One of them then spat on me and tore up my sign, and then, as I was wiping off his spit from my face, I saw the placard in Michael’s left hand fall to the grass, as his right hand closed into an angry fist. Then I saw his clenched hand barrel thunderously from his side until it landed smack on the nose of the giant guy who had spat on me. I actually heard the thud of the impact, and the man just collapsed to the ground from the force of Michael’s blow. He was out cold.

“Come on, shitheads – who’s next?!” Michael shouted at the first two counter- protestors, gesturing them to step up for a fight. By then, their entire group had gathered around, so Michael was even more outnumbered. But his dangerous rage was palpable – as if he alone could destroy everyone there. More of our protesters also started showing up, after hearing or seeing the commotion. But they weren’t needed in the end. The counter-protestors there raised their hands in surrender and backed away in fear of this large man who just knocked out an even larger man with a single punch. “OK, OK, take it easy. We’re leaving,” they said.

“Apologize to her. Now!” he boomed, ready to rip them to shreds. The first two protesters looked at me meekly.

“We’re sorry… We’re sorry, ma’am, that our friend got out of hand.”

“Yeah, he shouldn’t have done that.”

“Now get the fuck out of here!” Michael commanded. “It’s cool, dude, we’re leaving,” one of them said, as the two of them picked up their dazed comrade with a bloody and probably broken nose, and left the area with him stumbling between them...

I went over to Michael and very conspicuously put my arm around his waist. I then pulled him in for a long and intense kiss, as if our future together depended on it. After a few minutes, we finally came up for air, and my face felt flush with impatient passion.

“Let’s go back,” I said.

Lily's Review

5*

I honestly wish I had more than 5* to give this book, and that is not something I say lightly!
First off I feel the need to praise Mr. Love for the way he tackled a controversial topic, he did so in a flawless way that meant that even if the reader was ignorant of the Syrian Civil War or the issues surrounding it, that by the end of the book they were more than up to speed!
I can rarely pick up a book and relate to the majority of the characters, the Syrian Virgin is the exception! I found that even if I wasn't able to empathize with them, that I could sympathise with the emotions and realistic scenarios they found themselves in, and that, for me, is the key to a 5* book. They have some serious and quite heavy issues to overcome both individually and as a group but those mental and physical problems are dealt with in such an emotive, and ultimately honest, way that I found it positively refreshing!
The story is utterly captivating and had my full attention from start to finish!
I was sucked into their world and wasn't released until I had read every last word that they had to give! I can't remember the last time I picked up a book (that wasn't a textbook) and learnt something new! And for all of these reasons it now shares the spot as my #1 favourite book of all time!
A simply amazing book and you should all go one click right now!!!

Belle's Review

5*

This is the story of a young girls poignant and heart wrenching journey from Homs to the bright lights of New York City. Anissa is a very intelligent young girl and her family use that to their advantage to release and rescue her from war-torn Syria, before she leaves something happens (I'm not telling you what, so don't ask...go read the book) that leaves her utterly heart broken and traumatized beyond belief. Everything about her new city is foreign to her and she struggles with a fairly massive case of Post traumatic stress disorder and, I believe, a lot of survivors guilt too. Here she meets a young man that inspires her to speak up and campaign for her countrymen and in doing so, honouring her parents. Enter the dark, troubled (and very sexy) professor/business tycoon facing a lot of demons of his own. I know what your all thinking, this doesn't sound very romantic...well, in my opinion it isn't really a romance novel...not in the standard sense anyway...it's far more than that! What Zack Love has written here is a modern day masterpiece. Think War and Peace and you'd be closer! Exceptionally well written and touching beyond belief! Zack has managed to paint a mental picture in my psyche that no amount of ''fluffy literature'' can (or indeed should) erase. He has managed to highlight the many difficulties and travesties that are an every day occurrence in Syria and the worlds general ignorance and belief in the propaganda that's portrayed in the world press (I'm guilty of it myself) I'm giving Zack 5 stars because he earnt every last one of them. This is one of the few instances that I wish that I could have awarded more. Truly Exceptional! 5 STARS

Stories and Scripts: an Anthology by Zack Love SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Stories and Scripts: an Anthology by Zack Love

Thought-provoking, dreamy, sad, and hilarious, this collection of works by Zack Love takes the reader on a diverse and unforgettable literary journey through a variety of topics, themes, and emotions. The anthology totals about 73,000 words and contains a novelette, four short stories, a theater play, and a screenplay.

These seven spellbinding stories spanning several styles and genres include a dramatic romance, a satire of the mega-rich, a somber and soulful reflection on the problem of evil, humorous dating adventures, and stories driven by philosophical musings.

1) THE DOORMAN – A NOVELETTE

Alex seems to have it all: a great penthouse apartment, a lovely girlfriend, and a prestigious Wall Street job. But below the surface he is sure of nothing but his angst-ridden doubts. And when he realizes that his doorman may be God, or sent by God, he will question things like never before.

This novelette is a story of New York doormen, tormented love, empty office life, and the theological questions that arise in response to the horrors of evil.

My Review

5*
After reading Sex in the Title I wanted to read more of Zack's work and I was surprised by his diversity as an author! I found The Doorman to be an enthralling, thought provoking read that had me questioning my friends and family all day about their beliefs and whereabouts during the September 11 attacks. It has to be said I love the way Zack writes! For me he has found the perfect balance between keeping my mind active and alert enough that I'm not mentally bored and keeping me relaxed enough to still enjoy reading it! I thought the characters were like your normal everyday people, people that you could easily walk past on the street. The story, though short, is packed full of events that kept me thinking well after I had finished it! I love how he has combined what some will see as controversial topics to create a flawless intellectual, thought provoking masterpiece! The only thing I will say is that I would have liked it to be longer, but that is purely because I loved the way I reacted to it not because it actually needs to be longer! For me this book didn't lack in any aspect. Another amazing read from Mr. Love!!

2) CENTRAL PARK SONG – A SCREENPLAY (ROMANCE)

Can love really conquer all? Rodney is a passionate black man with brilliant talents but a mental illness that leaves him homeless. Melinda is a white Manhattan law partner with an artistic soul, trapped by the pressures of corporate law, her wealthy father, and her three-year boyfriend. A charming, chance encounter leads to a magical courtship and life-changing choices that make an unlikely New York romance possible.

My Review

4.5*
I'm going to start by saying that the only screenplays I have ever read, I read in school and I hated them (to be fair it was probably more because I hated being told what to read than the actual screenplay!) and I didn't think that I would ever see how any one would enjoy reading them! This is the first screenplay I have read voluntarily and I was pleasantly surprised, I actually found I enjoyed reading it and was able to form an amazing mental picture! Now having said that it could be all down to the fact that Zack writes in a unique way as I have also found that I am able to make an astoundingly clear mental pictures when reading his other works as well! I really liked the story and found myself doing something I rarely do.... Cheering for a HEA. I loved the characters and how there is such a varied selection of them, you have quite literally every personality type known to man in this screenplay and they all compliment each other! I found this to be a very addictive read and actually finished it in one sitting! Congratulations Zack you have officially obliterated all of my preconceptions about screenplays!!

3) THE GRAND UNIFIED STORY – A SHORT STORY

What happens when a man and a woman meet in a way that magically involves the entire universe? When both are so keenly aware of their place in the cosmos that their connection seems to transcend their union and capture the very essence of life. This story shows how each person is a world to be discovered and how sometimes, when two worlds collide, the universe seems that much closer.

My Review

4.5*
I feel the need to start this by saying that I am a HUGE science geek so this probably contributed to my love of this short story! I rarely read short stories but this one was intriguing and intellectual and had my attention throughout. I loved the scientific contribution to this story but even if I wasn't a science minded person I still would have been able to follow it as it is all explained in amazing detail. Being that its a short story there isn't a lot of room for character growth and development but the characters have an amazing back story considering the length! I was surprised at the amount of detail Zack managed to fit into this story without it being overly jam packed. Another gem of a story!

4) CITY SOLIPSISM – A SHORT STORY

Have you ever been on a train, bus, metro/subway – or any other shared space with strangers – and started to wonder what that person right next to you is thinking? This story takes you on a journey into the mind of a man in a suit and tie on a New York City subway car, as he thinks about the woman standing awkwardly close to him. They are total strangers but their proximity is almost intimate as their hands share the same metal subway pole.

My Review

4.5*
I often wonder what is going through peoples minds and so this short story amused me to no end! It was interesting seeing what conclusions another person's thought process would lead them to in this scenario and how much they would differ from mine. Having a small insight into a male's mind was very enlightening and very funny too! Being its a short story there isn't really much to comment on other than that it is well written, Zack is no doubt a talented writer and I can honestly say I would and have recommended his work to many readers and will continue to do so until they give in and one-click!!!

5) WAITING FOR 2000 – AN ABSURDIST COMEDY OF BILLIONAIRE PROPORTIONS

Inspired by and reminiscent of Samuel Beckett’s absurdist stage play “Waiting for Godot,” this Y2K theater comedy satirizes the frivolous extravagance of the mega-rich.

Bob’s Billionaire Boat boasts the world’s 2,000 richest people on it, and will enable them to celebrate the arrival of the year 2000 twice in a row by crossing the International Dateline on New Year's Eve 1999. The co-captains of the boat — two regular guys — keep themselves amused with endlessly silly banter while occasionally debating whether the whole thing is just a fictional stage play.

Meanwhile, two Wall Street traders who are bitter about missing the wealth cutoff for the billionaire cruise are determined to blow up the boat and thereby become the two richest people on earth.

In this satire, the zaniest billionaires ever to gather on a single vessel prove that there's still plenty to complain about at the top.

My Review

5*
I'm going to start this by saying I have always had a love hate relationship with theatre so for me reading this was either going to be a huge hit or an epic failure and I can honestly say that I loved it! It had me laughing all the way through and the dialogue between Sam & Al had me in absolute pieces! I loved the wide range of characters and all of their quirks, it made them seem more human! I'm actually a little ashamed to admit that I would have loved to be on that cruise!! I never though in a million years that I would actually enjoy reading this so I was pleasantly surprised by just how much I did in fact enjoy it. If this was made into a play I would go and see it and drag all my family and friends along as well, it is just that funny! It has everything I want in a play and more! Zack has a knack of throwing everything needed into whatever he is writing and then that extra something that you never knew it needed!

6) MY BEST VALENTINE'S DAY. EVER. – A SHORT STORY

Sammy Laffowitz is legendary for his dating disasters and sex mishaps. This time, misfortune strikes on Valentine's Day – but with a fun twist that makes Sammy seem studly for a change.

My Review

5*
I was SO excited to read this after Sex in The Title, I loved Heeb and the guys and I was so desperate for more of their crazy antics! I couldn't help but laugh at Sammy's misfortunes and even though that seems really evil I just couldn't help it! Reading this I was so glad that for once it was like I was laughing WITH him at his misfortunes rather than AT him! If you read this and haven't read Sex in The Title then you need to rectify that IMMEDIATELY! ;)

7) MY WORST VALENTINE'S DAY. EVER. – A SHORT STORY

Yi Wang is a NY bad boy who plans to make history on Valentine's Day with his female exploits. The handsome, alpha-male, Chinese-American is a corporate lawyer who usually gets his way with women, but this time he makes one stupid mistake that leaves everyone but him laughing hysterically at his epic fail.

My Review

5*
Narc was one of my favourite characters in Sex in The Title and so I was so pleased I got to read a bit more of him! Although he was one of my favourites I still thought he needed to be taken down a peg or two, seriously the guy has a god complex! This has got to be one of the funniest short stories I've ever read, I was actually doubled over where I was laughing so hard! I loved how the story unfolded and it was not what I was expecting at all! It is laugh out loud funny from start to finish and I challenge anyone to read it and keep a straight face!

Overall Anthology Review

4.5*
Overall this is an amazing Anthology and I'm not going to lie I was surprised at how diverse Zack is as a writer, you just wouldn't expect anyone to able to successfully write so many different genres! Honestly no one has a right to be as talented as Zack is, but don't tell him I said that, we don't need his head to get any bigger ;). I enjoyed every part of this anthology and I can rarely say that, It has such a mishmash and it shouldn't work but it really does! It is almost like each piece compliments the next! Well worth a read!

Sex in the Title by Zack Love SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Sex in the Title by Zack Love Review

New York City, May 2000. The Internet bubble has burst and Evan, a computer programmer, is fired with an email from his boss. The next day, his girlfriend dumps him, also via email. Afraid to check any more emails, Evan desperately seeks a rebound romance but the catastrophes that ensue go from bad to hilariously worse.

Fortunately, Evan meets Sammy -- someone whose legendary disasters with females eclipse even his own. To reverse their fortunes, they recruit their friends -- Trevor, Yi, and Carlos -- to form a group of five guys who take on Manhattan in pursuit of dates, sex, and adventure.

When Evan, a closet writer, falls desperately in love with a Hollywood starlet, he schemes to meet her by writing a novel that will sweep her off her feet. Sammy knows nothing about publishing but is confident of one thing: Evan's book should have the word "sex" in the title.

With musings about life, relationships, and human psychology, this quintessential New York story about the search for happiness follows five men on their comical paths to trouble, self-discovery, and love.

My Review

5*
I can honestly say that I haven't read ANYTHING this funny in a long time if ever!! Zack Love is a genius its that simple! He has 5 well developed main characters that I think everyone will be able to relate to in some way shape or form, you will have a favourite in no time! I loved the story, I prefer a busy plot as I find it keeps me more engaged and this crazy chaotic book kept me not only engaged but riveted! Its laugh out loud funny and even though some people may find it offensive or crass, I think as long as you have a sense of humour then this will have you laughing for days! It is a true piece of comedic genius! I am very tempted to give copies of it to all the uptight people in my life for Christmas!! Its one of those books that just makes you go 'OMG that would make an EPIC movie!!' Its like a horny male version of Love Actually but on steroids! ;) And if you are anything like me then you will be looking around your group of friends wondering which one will end up with or has had that specific injury ;) I soooooo want more from these 5 friends!! I will be recommending this to anyone I come across who has even a slight sense of humour! Mr. Love be prepared because I want a sequel!! :D
