To Mend a Broken Heart
by KA Hobbs
Katie’s life has been turned upside down. When an accident takes away her world, she can’t understand how she is supposed to go on living. Consumed by grief, everything hurts and the easy things are now the most difficult. When she decides to volunteer at the local children’s hospital she meets Daniel a man trying to overcome his own sadness. Together they form a friendship that helps heal them both. But is it too soon? Can Katie leave the past behind and move forward? Or are some wounds just too deep to heal?

The
first word that comes to mind when I think of Daniel is SIGH.... Not
a sigh of frustration or boredom but a breathy
OMG-where-has-he-been-all-my-life kind of sigh! Daniel is quite
simply perfection... He isn't just a book bf, he is so much more than
that, he represents the strength we all have inside of us, the one
that we don't even realise exists until we need to call upon it for
whatever reason. I honestly can't put into words how Daniel makes me
feel over than that huge sigh!!!
Daniel
and Katie haven't had it easy by no stretch of the imagination and
their story will have you in pieces more times than I can count, but
what you'll soon realise is that one of their happy moments is worth
all of the heartbreaking ones! They aren't like most fictional
couples and they don't have the start that most couples do, their
story is one of healing, of finding the light in the darkness, of
finding that warmth that can only come from feeling truly loved. It's
haunting, it's heart stopping and it's utterly breathtaking.
To
Mend a Broken Heart really does have everything... Two solid and well
developed main characters that'll capture your heart in seconds,
incredible secondary characters that'll have you laughing more than
you think possible and a magical storyline that'll make you believe
that everything really does happen for a reason.
What
you need to remember while reading To Mend a Broken Heart is that
grief is subjective and you'll never know exactly how someone else's
grief and guilt affects them, if you keep that in mind then you'll be
able to fully appreciate the amazing story of Katie and Daniel. Thank
you KA Hobbs for sharing these two and their beautiful story with the
world, Daniel and Katie will forever have a piece of my heart. <3
EXCERPT
We finish packing everything away and before I know it, I’ve finished for the day. I’m not sure where Daniel is, Sally asked him to help her with something and he never came back. I want to say goodbye to him but I guess that won’t be happening. I grab my bag and jacket and make my way to the main door. Just as I push it open I hear my name being called from behind me. I turn around and see Daniel, rushing down the corridor with his jacket in his hands.
“I’m glad I caught you.” he pants.
“You are?”
“Yes.. I wanted to ask if you’d like to go out for a drink?”
I’m taken aback by his invite. Not sure how I should answer or even how I want to. A hundred different answers run through my mind, along with a thousand different reasons why I should say yes and the most important one being, because I want to. But I’m not sure I can make my mouth form the words my head is screaming at me to say.
“I’m not sure.” I answer honestly.
“I don’t mean anything by it, just.. I don’t have many friends Katie, and those I do have, they all look at me with the same look, the look that says I feel sorry for you. I don’t want people to feel sorry for me and I can’t spend another night alone. I’d really like to go out, have a couple of drinks and just be with someone who doesn’t know me for what I was then, but just for what I am now.”
His honesty surprises me, Daniel is nothing if not honest. I really do want to go out for a drink with him as friends, nothing more. I understand so very much exactly what he feels. A night without anyone asking me if I’m okay, a night without being Richard’s widow. That’s what I want.
“I’d love to.” I answer quickly, before my guilt can make me answer otherwise.
Author bio
KA Hobbs lives with her husband in Essex. When she isn’t lost in a book or creating one, she loves to cook, swim, colour and shop. Her happiest times are always when she is surrounded by family and friends or watching Cinderella which some might say she is a little obsessed with. She is a little obsessed with the Tudors and would love to go back to that period in time.
One day, while watching TV, a scene came to her, completely out of the blue. She could see the scene unfolding, could picture the characters so clearly. She couldn't get to her laptop quick enough and spent hours writing not only that scene, but lots of others too.
She will happily admit to being grumpy when she doesn’t get to write, she loves her characters and spending time listening to what they have to say.
